While the High Country series focuses on the present, I find it important to occasionally look back at the recordings that led me here. Today’s dispatch is a song called "Been Waiting." It was recorded in 2004, a year that remains a major milestone for me because it was the same year I met my wife.

Looking back at this track, it is clear that my style hasn't changed much in over 20 years. Even with the different production choices of that era, the core "wood and wire" intent was already the foundation of my music.

The Recording

Unlike the minimalist approach I am taking today, this 2004 track was a full production. It features multiple layers of tracking, a variety of instruments, and a full drum kit. At the time, I was exploring a much denser sound and pushing the limits of the studio to build a larger sonic landscape. However, listening through the layers of production, you can still hear the same acoustic DNA that drives my current work. It is a reminder that while the tools change, the source of the music remains the same.

The Story

Every songwriter has a few songs that act as anchors for certain periods of their life. "Been Waiting" belongs to that first chapter in 2004. Meeting my wife changed the trajectory of my life and my music, and this song was written right in the middle of that shift. It captures the anticipation and the clarity that comes when things finally start falling into place.

The Lyrics

Including the lyrics here helps bridge the gap between that 2004 recording and the present. These words were written twenty years ago, but the sentiment remains a foundation of my songwriting.

When you came to me it was faithfully

When I couldn't spell L O V E

But when I met you from the start I knew

You'd be mine and I'd be yours too

So hold me forever and don't let me go

I'll be singing these words for my soul

And even if you may be far far away

I'll be coming right there to your door

When you smile at me makes me feel happy

When we kiss your lips taste so sweet

When you laugh it's done it's my heart that you won

And I know that you got to be the one

Eyes the color of the morning sky

Look at mine while you make this guy’s

Heart melt away as if it was

Under the heat of a thousand suns

Sending me messages on my phone

Making me smile when I feel alone

Think about you every single day

Whether you're close or you're far away

I cannot remember the last time I ever

Just wanted to spend so much time here together

The cold of December or heat of the summer

I'll be there right with you no matter the weather

I can’t stop this feeling it’s part of my being

so listen to me sing about the joy you bring

You’re everything I ever wanted to have

I just wanted you to know that

Well I know that you see you can count on me

When you need me there that's where I'll be

And you know it's true baby I love you

I've been waiting my whole life for you
